The central steering committee of 11-Party Alliance, a combine of left and democratic political parties, on Tuesday urged the interim government to declare the flood-affected areas in Jessore and Khulna as disaster areas.

Leaders of the alliance in a statement also called on the government to launch relief operation and provide food and medicines shortly for the flood-affected people in the two districts.

The combine leaders said the River Kapodak had overflowed and flooded the vast areas in Jessore and Khulna, forcing thousands of people to take refuge at different shelter centres.

Flash flood had caused the displacement of thousands of people who had been suffering a lot at different shelter centres due to lack of food, they added.

Workers Party of Bangladesh also demanded that the government should immediately take measures to save the flood-affected people in Jessore and Khulna.

Party president Rashed Khan Menon and general secretary Bimal Biswas in a statement urged the government to declare the flood-affected areas in Jessore and Khulna as disaster areas.
